Nopal cactus (prickly pear) contains selenium. Selenium helps maintain the elasticity of the skin tissue with the help of vitamin E(1*). Selenium also serves as an antioxidant just like vitamins A, C and E. Selenium is incorporated into proteins and forms selenoproteins which are important antioxidant enzymes(2*). As with all forms of antioxidants, selenoproteins helps stop cellular damage from free radicals(3*).

Selenium has garnered popularity as an essential element because supplementation of this mineral shows promise in cancer research(4*). Moreover, supplementation with selenium is recommended for men over 50 to ensure prostate health. An enlarged prostate can lead to troubles urinating and even pain. Also known as benign prostate hypertrophy, this condition is so common that it's assumed all men will experience it to some degree or another if they live long enough(5*), (6*), (7*).
